Katharine Hepburn's Brownies- Unbelievable Moist! | The Hopeless Housewife

These are the most wonderful and moist brownies you will ever have. My mother’s friend Carolyn (who is an incredible baker) would make these for us when I was a child. Every time I make these as an adult, I am constantly asked for the recipe. This recipe is so simple and easy—only requiring a tiny bit of flour (it’s not a typo below). I have kept the original wording in this recipe from Katharine Hepburn herself!

Katharine Hepburn’s Brownies

This recipe is best doubled, but kept in he same 8x8 pan and same cooking time. The result is a thicker, richer brownie.

  • 2 squares of unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of walnuts
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • ¼ cup flour (yes, just ¼ cup)
  • ¼ tsp. salt

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Melt unsweetened chocolate and butter in a heavy sauce pan.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in sugar. Add eggs along with vanilla and beat like mad.
  4. Stir in flour, salt, and chopped walnuts – not smashed up, you know, but just chopped into fairly good sized pieces. Now mix that all up.
  5. Butter a square tin (8x8 inches) and dump the whole thing quickly into the pan. Stuff this pan into a preheated 325 degrees oven for 40 minutes. Take out the pan and let it cool. Cut into 1 ½ inch squares.
