Gooey Gluten-Free Brownies

You won’t believe these are gluten-free! They are based on Katharine Hepburn’s famous brownie recipe- it already calls for a low amount of flour, and when you substitute rice flour for the all purpose flour you can almost not tell.

Gooey Gluten-Free Brownies


  • 3 squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/4 cup rice flour plus 2 tablespoons
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts


  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter an 8x8 square glass pan and set aside.
  2. Melt unsweetened chocolate and butter over low- medium low heat in a heavy sauce pan.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in sugar. Add eggs and vanilla and whisk for a minute.
  4. Stir in flour, salt, and walnuts. Pour into pan and bake for 40 minutes. Let cool then cut into 1 ½ inch squares.
